The story follows Catherine and David as they each face their own obstacles: Catherine must learn how to fit in at school and not be embarrassed by her brother’s behaviors and David must learn how to cope with new situations and find ways to stay calm. She convinces her parents to create a “Rules” book, a collection of visual cues for David to follow that enhance both his safety and his quality of life. Eventually she learns to accept that he is the way he is-although it is sometimes difficult-and is able to include him in everyday activities.
